Q&A with punk meets rapper Shemy

Not your usual punk rock track, rapper Shemy’s  ‘Something Bout You’ blurs the line between rap and punk-pop, for sure. Featured on the track is viral artist Foxchase who brings his airy punk vocals to the forefront on this release alongside the masterful rap technique of Shemy. This release will form part of vocalist Shemy’s upcoming album Awkwardly Confident on the 5th of May. With over 500 000 streams on Spotify for his previous release ‘Cobra Kai’, we can only expect Shemy to pick up further traction with this forthcoming album.

We chatted with vocalist Shemy below.

How did it all start for you?

When I was a kid, my mom played everything from Motown’s greatest hits to classic and alternative rock, as well as grunge and post grunge. So one minute I was listening to Marvin Gaye or the Jackson 5 and the next minute I was listening to ‘Don’t Stop Believin’, followed by Alanis Morissette’s ‘Jagged Little Pill’. My dad listened to the likes of Queen and Elton John. So I was exposed to a solid mix of all genres early on. I saw Eminem’s ‘My Name Is’ video on TV in 5th grade and was like.. w.t.f. is this!?!?! Or at least I’m sure that’s what I thought. I was introduced to hip hop and my love for music came full circle.

Which three artists would you say made you want to create your own music?

Tupac, Eminem, Queen.

What is your go-to gear/equipment when creating?

I record on a Townsend Sphere L22 through an Apollo Twin Duo into Pro Tools.

What are some of your key influences in your music? Whether it be the sound created by others, imagery, films or any kind of art form.

My influences are forever changing. Right now I’m influenced by rappers like Symba and Grafh, as well as pop phenom Jon Bellion, the youngin’ Kid Laroi and alt/indie newcomer Matt Maeson. That’s why my music is so palatable. I can lyrically go off and then sing you a punk song about my broken heart.

What is one sub-genre you think doesn’t get the attention it deserves?

Honestly, conscious rap.

Any new or upcoming artists on your radar?

Symba.

What single night out has been the most memorable for you? As a performer? As an attendee?

The first time I saw Jay-Z in concert in Detroit is my most memorable music-filled night out.

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

My single ‘Something Bout You’ feat. Fox Chase and Dane Amar dropped March 17th, 2021. My album ‘Awkwardly Confident’ will follow on May 5th, 2021. ‘Awkwardly Confident’ is my best work to date. My younger brother got an early listen and said, “You’re in your prime. If this doesn’t solidify you, hang it up.” I know what he meant. He was drunk, but he means well. lol.

Famous last words?

Let’s take a shot.
