You may have heard whispers in the air throughout July about a new release from Jamila & The Other Heroes. Actually, a roar of defiance might be a better term as the five-piece band have released a defiant anthem against the injustices experienced while crossing borders. Their latest psychedelic funk single is named ‘BORDER SYNDROME احلام بلا حدود’ and is the second of two double concept singles. ‘YABA يابا,’ was released last month, to the joy of fans around the world. The band are continuing to treat their listeners, sharing a music video for ‘BORDER SYNDROME’ that finds the sweet spot between depicting a serious topic and a clear joy for performance.
Since returning to the world of live music, Jamila & The Other Heroes have been performing at one sold-out show after another, including their latest performance at Sisyphos in Berlin. The video for ‘BORDER SYNDROME احلام بلا حدود’ gives us a small idea of the energy that must accompany these shows, as we’re drawn into a colourful world of passion and protest.
“My dream of a togetherness that is crossing borders became true with the production of this music video. Half of the film crew in front and behind the camera were Palestinians and Syrians, while the other half people from all over the globe such as Russia, Germany and Argentina. All of us are stranded in Berlin looking for freedom. We were co-creating something very special, imagining a utopic safer space. We were living through discriminatory situations again and thinking about where we escaped from or what we wanted to free ourselves from to be together in this space through art was really empowering” – Jamila Al-Yousef tells us about the creation of the video.
