City Mall‘s ‘Golden Eye,’ released on March 4 by Cavaca Records, is a new chapter in their synth-pop journey. The São Paulo group includes singer Mariana Stein, now based in Curitiba, and beat-makers Pedro Spadoni and Matheus Del Claro. Their music blends jazz-inspired chords with touches of ’80s style and Japanese city pop. They first appeared with the EP ‘Lobby Songs‘ in late 2024 on the same label, followed by ‘City Tour’ in May 2025, a collaboration with Sound Department under the Patterns project. Cavaca Records had a strong year in 2025, earning two spots in Brazil’s top 100 albums according to the APCA Awards. On this release, City Mall sharpens their talent for creating music that balances quiet moments with anticipation.

The song builds gentle synth pulses over a rich background, blending live drums with electronic samples to create a feeling of tension. It takes inspiration from Boards of Canada’s ambient sounds and DIIV’s dreamy guitars, but City Mall highlights the moments of buildup before anything actually happens. The lyrics borrow from Emily Dickinson’s poetry, treating conflict as something inside and playful, like children at play, without picking winners or losers. In the chorus, the title becomes a metaphor for making choices, weighing feelings against actions and leaving the meaning open to the listener.

Pedro revealed: “The image that guided the entire composition and production process in our minds was that of an isolated fortress in the middle of snow and ice—completely inaccessible. That’s why the cover carries that same coldness. This ‘photograph’ is as much a part of the music as the soundscape itself.” Visually, Spadoni‘s custom lettering tops a John Singer Sargent piece, echoing the track’s probe into unreachable layers.
