Cut Worms, the project of songwriter Max Clarke, has confirmed the arrival of his fourth full-length Transmitter on March 13. Clarke broke through with significant praise surrounding his 2018 debut, then expanded his scope on the sprawling 2020 release Nobody Lives Here Anymore before delivering the assured self-titled album in 2023. The new record was tracked at Wilco’s The Loft studio under the guidance of Jeff Tweedy, a production choice that aligns neatly with Clarke’s melodic strengths and attention to detail.
The announcement arrives with lead single “Windows on the World,” a standout cut that features Tweedy on electric guitar and bass alongside Glenn Kotche on percussion. The song confronts a deep sense of American disenchantment, its subdued melancholy landing in the same emotional territory as Elliott Smith’s hushed confessions and the jangly introspection of Miracle Legion. A accompanying video, directed by Caroline Gohlke, was filmed on location across New York City streets, capturing the track’s quiet unease in everyday urban settings.
Max Clarke shared: “The stories in these songs are equal parts innocence and experience—dealing with the ecstatic moments of being freshly enamored with the world as well as the isolation and seclusion that can come after. On view are the unseen inner sanctums of quiet daily life—the private worlds that people inhabit, where they don’t or can’t let anyone else in. It is not a uniquely American phenomenon, but it does seem prevalent here, rooted in the mythos of rugged individualism and the idea that each person must be strong enough to make it on their own or die.”
