Plain Mister Smith makes a striking return with his second album, Bric-a-Brac Attack, released this past weekend through Amelia Records. Known for his musical versatility, he once played guitar with Canadian darkwave band Moev and now brings his talents as a cellist to the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra. Under the Plain Mister Smith name, his music has captured the attention of NPR Music, 1883 Magazine, Wonderland Magazine, CLASH Magazine, NOTION, Under The Radar, Earmilk, METAL, Noctis Mag, Atwood Mag and more. Dividing his days between Vancouver and London, he creates indie-folk soundscapes that blend sharp lyricism with a restless, introspective spirit.
The album begins with the standout track ‘Grindavik’, which instantly wraps the listener in a gentle, contemplative mood. Luminous acoustic guitars paint the scene as Plain Mister Smith journeys back to the Icelandic town of Grindavík, a place recently shaped by volcanic upheaval. The song blends evocative storytelling with a deep sense of yearning. Laid-back, groove-laden drums ground the shifting chords, giving the track both a sense of closeness and while still feeling expansive. Guest artists Jordan Klassen and Kitt add further layers of richness and emotion.
Plain Mister Smith shared: “The recent volcanic eruptions in Grindavik show the earth in distress, and are an analogy for a relationship in distress. In the same way I hoped the fissures in the earth would meld and heal, I also hoped the fissure in the relationship would heal.”
