2020 saw rock band Pacific play multiple virtual live concerts (Liverpool Sound City’s Guest House’, Manchester Arena’s 25th Anniversary to name a few). The band has a unique flair for combining indie and dramatic piano-infused notes to their anthemic rock ballads. Pacific have started their 2021 with their first release ‘Puzzle’, guaranteed to make you stream multiple times.
The band tells us about their future plans in the exclusive below.
Looking back, what were some of your earliest entries into music appreciation? And music production?
Drew – As much as it is a cliche, all of us would agree that the earliest memories of musical appreciation stem from our parent’s record collections. Whether it’s The Police, Led Zeppelin, or ELO. We all carry that influence into the studio to record!
Take us through your songwriting process. Are there any particular steps you take when putting music together?
Anthony – I always start writing songs on the piano, whether that’s getting the chord progression sorted, or the main hook or riff. The main thing for us is music always comes first, then melody, then lyrics.
What gets your creative juices flowing?
Dan – Sometimes you just get a feeling that now’s a good time to sit down on the piano and write – without knowing why. To be honest, it usually comes later in a day – so if I had to narrow it down, I’d say the evening time! You can also write yourself into a lull – so sometimes, it’s good to have a breakaway, enjoy what you like to do – & come back full of ideas and energy.
As a musician, it becomes apparent that there is a huge difference between the art and the business. Is there anything about the music scene that you would personally change?
Drew – I’d say whilst there is a difference between the business mindset and being on stage, one cannot exist without the other. The business side of the music may not be the reason we started a band, but it is needed in order to propel the band further. For that reason, I wouldn’t change the way we personally operate.
Studio work and music creation or performing and interacting with a live audience, which do you prefer?
Drew – That depends who you ask! Personally, nothing beats the live show, for me, that’s when everything comes together. However, there is something magical about the studio and the creative process.
What is the most memorable response you have had to your music?
Anthony – It’s got to be someone getting a tattoo of our band name + all four of our signatures on their bicep!
What’s on your current playlist?
Anthony – Nothing But Thieves, Temples, The Blinders & Kid Kapichi are current bands that are dominating my playlist!
Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you in the near future?
Dan – We’ve set ourselves some ambitious targets for 2021, aiming for 6 new single releases. We’re currently finishing writing the next couple whilst soon to be amping up the buzz for the second single of this year after Puzzle.
Famous last words?
Dan – One day we’ll search higher than the ocean on Google.
