UK-based alternative rock band Conflict Choir started out as a band for frontman Ali Clinton’s solo project, but quickly became a much deeper connection. Their music ranges from cinematic textures to brutal crushing force within mere seconds. Throwing in virtuosic musicianship from lead singer and guitarist Ali Clinton and drummer Jack Bowles, the duo consists of some of the UK’s most diverse session musicians. The group are an experimental rock powerhouse born from the ashes of 2020’s global lockdown, and much of their music questions the effects that modern life, technology and all things surrounding it has on our mental health. ‘Algorithm’ is their latest body of work, taken from the forthcoming album Strange Game.
Speaking about the single and upcoming album, Conflict Choir share: “Algorithm is the next single from our full album ‘Strange Game’, which is being released single by single. Each single has it’s own unique style and personality and has alternative versions that we will sometimes release online on our Patreon but will reserve special versions only available as physical copies at our live shows – something for hardcore fans to really dig their teeth into. We’re also releasing a visual representation of our world with each single to immerse the audience even further.”
“Algorithm is about the struggles of navigating through the digital age and the effect that our technologies have on our mental health and states of being. The song is from the perspective of the algorithm itself and is a thought piece on whether the morality we have printed upon the technologies we use is in alignment with our ideal or if we’re seeing more sinister outcomes from the technologies we have created.”
Turning the pandemic into something positive, the turbulent time and constraining experience gave the band numerous sources of material to write about. ‘Strange Game’ has a heavy mental health theme throughout yet questions philosophical pondering, dystopian outlooks and abuse. Engineered with the help of their friend Thomas Atlas, the release was further mixed and mastered by Greg Chandler at Priory Studios to take the sound to the amazing HiFi sound that you hear in the finished project. As session players, the members of Conflict Choir have previously worked with Uli Jon Roth (Scorpions), Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake), Girls of the Internet, Thomas Atlas, Mnelia, Cleopatra and Indigo Marshall (who opened up the Birmingham Commonwealth Games).
